The H.G. Blake Humanitarian Award is an honor given to individuals who have made significant contributions to humanitarian efforts in Medina County. This award recognizes people who demonstrate extraordinary compassion, dedication, and impact in improving the lives of others. Recipients of this award often engage in activities such as providing aid during crises, advocating for social justice, or conducting charitable work that benefits disadvantaged populations within Medina County. The H.G. Blake Humanitarian Award celebrates and encourages meaningful efforts to enhance human welfare and promote social good.
Why H. G. Blake?
H. G. Blake was a prominent member of Medina who spent a lifetime serving people. He was the founder of the Old Pheonix National Bank, an attorney, a founding member of the Medina Odd Fellows, and even the city’s mayor. As if that wasn’t enough, he also served in the Ohio House of Representatives, the Ohio State Senate, the United States Congress, and as a colonel in the United States Army during the Civil War. Add to all of that his participation in the Underground Railroad providing safe haven for those fleeing slavery and it’s hard to think of a more selfless soul. You can find him now in the Spring Grove Cemetery where we, the Odd Fellows, maintain the baby section.
